A formula to help choose better responses

Kim Newton-Woof

The well-known E+R=O model is a simple but powerful framework for understanding how our responses to events shape the outcomes we experience.

EVENT (E) + RESPONSE (R) = OUTCOME (O)

Popularised by motivational speaker and author Jack Canfield, the underlying principle is rooted in various philosophies and psychological approaches that emphasise personal responsibility and the power of choice in shaping outcomes.

The model is based on the idea that individuals can control their responses to external events, a concept also reflected in cognitive-behavioural psychology and stoic philosophy.

It suggests that while we cannot always control the events in our lives (E), we can control how we respond to those events (R), and our responses directly influence the outcomes (O).

  • E (Event) – Any situation, circumstance, or occurrence that is often beyond our control. It can be something positive or negative, big or small.

  • R (Response) – How you choose to respond to the event. Your response can be physical actions, words, thoughts, attitudes, or emotions.

  • O (Outcome) – The result or consequence of the event and your response to it.

Flip the formula, improve the outcome

However a simple shift in how we approach the formula can create a powerful pause that interrupts habitual patterns of thought and behaviour.

EVENT (E) + OUTCOME (O) = RESPONSE (R)

Again, while we cannot always control the events in our lives (E), taking a moment to focus on the outcome we desire (O) disrupts our usual programmed tendency to act in a certain way. This pause introduces a sense of distance between the event and our experience of it, allowing us to choose a response (R) that better serves us.

Questions to ask yourself that help build resilience when using this formula might include:

• What’s the outcome I want?

• What’s important or helpful for me to communicate right now?

• What assumptions am I making about this event?

• What’s in my control right now?
